Hmm, porpoises, eh? They’re the smallest cetaceans and they’re really cute and awesome, they’re like whales and dolphins little cousins.
Porpoises do not do well in captivity, where they are forced to perform tricks they would not normally do in the wild, and they are isolated from their tight family units. They are extremely fast swimmers and very social and tank life leaves them depressed and sick. Like dolphins and whales in captivity, porpoises are fed a cocktail of antibiotics and anti-depressants to keep them alive.
Most often, however, porpoises are not taken into captivity. The main threats to them today are being caught as fishing bycatch, being fished illegally as food or bait, and overfishing depleting their food stocks.
