This is what you think it is.
I’ve been kicking this idea around for a while now. I want to meet members of the Tumblr Writing Community and hear all of your stories and see where you are from (stories are all rooted in place, after all) and meet y’all because you are wonderful people who mean so much to me.
The idea is this: Either this fall, or next spring, I will load up my car, bring a tent, water, extra fuel, my mechanics kit, an atlas, and five gallons of GORP, and push off from New Hampshire heading west. Heading towards all of you.
While I travel to visit all of you I’ll be compiling and publishing a travelogue where I write a story of each meeting, share your pictures (if you want) and give a human face to this writing community. I’ll call it “The Americans” because, alas, I cannot drive across the ocean. And also because the “road trip” is such a quintessentially American theme. It is a classic narrative in and of itself.
Ursula K. LeGuin says there are two types of story: the War (like the Iliad) and the Journey (like the Odyssey). This is the journey. This is the search. This is me searching for the storytellers.
I like this idea.
